How to Turn Your VHS Tapes into DVDs
Digitizing Your VHS Cassettes
DemystifyingDigital.com reader Pamela S. recently wrote to us to find out how she could easily convert her old VHS tapes into a digital format. Specifically, Pamela said she had tons of old VHS tapes lying around that she wanted to transfer onto DVDs.
Well Pamela, join the club. We know many, many people who have the same problem but, unfortunately there's not one easy answer. The best summary of all the options out there -- including paying Costco to do it for you -- is on the Unclutterer.com website in an article entitled How to Digitally Encode VHS Home Movies.
Another simple option is to just buy a DVD/VCR combo device which lets you directly transfer your old VHS tapes to DVD without having to go through your computer. While these devices aren't that common, they're not terribly expensive and could save you a lot of hassle. The best one we've seen is the Samsung DVD VR375 VHS Combo DVD Recorder which is available for about $150.
