Sony is not the first company to wedge a printer into a digital photo frame, but they are the latest and the highest profile brand (that I'm aware of) to do so.
Let's
go to the specs:
- The DPP-F700 features a 7-inch widescreen LCD display with WVGA (800 x 480) resolution.
- It prints 4 x 6-inch photos at 300 x 300 dpi in 45 seconds.
- It supports on-screen editing before you print and includes built-in templates for making creative items such as calendars or ID photos.
- A Screen Capture function lets you print a photo on the screen during a slideshow.
- It sports 1GB of internal memory and an auto picture rotation which properly orients a photo when the unit is positioned horizontally or vertically.
It's due in January for $200.
Now, there's definitely a strong case to be made for a printer with a very large, high-resolution LCD display for doing some PC-free editing and reviewing before printing (even the 3-inch display found an a growing number of photo printers is still a bit small). There's a case to be made for owning a digital photo frame. But I confess I still don't see the case for combining them. It seems like either the frame or the printer is eventually going to wither on the vine. I guess the Screen Capture function would be neat in a party setting where someone wanted to grab a snapshot of a photo that you've displayed - but I'd rather email them the photo and save the ink (I'm cheap like that).
