Toshiba unveils "near-HD" disc player

What is it with Toshiba? The Japanese consumer electronics giant was the driving force behind the high-definition HD DVD format, which bit the dust a few months ago, making all the room in world for the competing system, Blu-ray. Now Toshiba is re-entering that market segment with a "near HD" player it says delivers.....well, near-HD image quality from standard DVD discs. The $150 player, called the XD-E500 and on sale right now, is aimed at viewers who'd buy into an upscaling DVD player "with an added layer of enhancement" that brings picture quality "closer to HD," said Louis Masses, product planning...
