Holiday Shopping Not Looking Joyful for E Commerce

Interesting Web site called, 247Wallstreet.com is trolling a modern and not so joyful yuletide chorus for holiday sales, online and off. In view of the current lack of public confidence, consumers (like us) fearing possible layoffs and downsizing (again!) will be keeping a tight guard on our wallets this year. Looks like 2008’s upsurge of cash changing hands for gifts hasn’t met retailers’ expectations. About 4% more money has been spent so far than this period last year. That’s a much smaller increase than annual trends showed for the past few years. And online, where buying has been leaping up at...

The World Wide Web Is the New TV

Check this out. Here’s a group of tech-savvy baby boomers who literally got their act together. What they’ve created is a humorous web series called www.50todeath.com. It’s one of those new Web shows, and the story revolves around three boomers jousting with everything the 21st Century throws their way. A Web series is like a television program – sitcom, drama, whatever – except that it’s written and produce specifically for Web-based video. For a review of “50 to Death,” visit Tubefilter. The production company plans to air monthly webisodes for the next year. The company consists of Norm Golden, recently of televisions’...

Where to Do Research on the Web

Encyclopedias were once our major source of quick information. If you were lucky enough to own a set at home, you pulled out a big, heavy book and laboriously looked up a topic. If you had an encyclopedia, someone in your house had a lot of disposable income! Now, we go online for information and casual research. In the early days of the 'Net, we could find excellent, factual, free sources. Now, we're cautious and take a lot of what we read with a huge grain. Anyone can claim to be an expert and anyone can post anything online. If you haven't...

What do Snopes, Bill Gates and Barrack Obama Have in Common?

There's a joke that travels periodically around the Internet about Bill Gates supposedly comparing the computer industry to the auto industry. Not only is the joke pretty amusing, tracking its origins is a good excuse to revisit one of my favorite sites, Snopes, where you can get the real lowdown on almost anything you read on the Web. The gist of the joke is this: There's word in business circles that the computer industry likes to measure itself against the Big Three automakers. The comparison goes like this: If automotive technology kept pace with Silicon Valley, motorists could buy a V-32...

Baby Boomer Bloggers May One Day Rule the Web

There's some pretty awesome writing on the Web by people of our generation, the baby boomers. We're blogging! I'll admit there's blog trash, too - rants about how awful Gen X is. On and ons about precious grandchildren (yes, they're precious, but you gotta draw the line at a certain number of adorable photos, yes?) So go surf the Web and check some of these oldies and goodies in the blogosphere. Aging Hipsters The Boomer Blog BoomersTV Baby Boomer Blog Baby...

Advanced Technology Is Indistinguishable from Magic

Geek and nerd humor. (Try and stop me, if you've heard these before.) The Geek shall inherit the earth (a nod to Time mag for this, I think, and now, browse the Top Ten Pop Culture Geeks by Andrew Leahy) Windows will never cease (nor will the service packs required to keep Windows going...my favorite sad truth!!) What boots up must, and surely will, come down. Hard. Never bite off more than you can browse Give a child a fish and...
