Toshiba Goes Blu-ray; World Does Not Stop Turning

Yes, Toshiba, one of the main companies behind the now defunct HD DVD standard, announced this morning that it was finally switching teams to the Blu-ray disc format. The move was seen as inevitable after Blu-ray defeated HD DVD back in 2008 and the world of high definition discs has gradually gone "Blu." Along with announcing it has applied for membership in the Blu-ray Disc Association, Toshiba said in a brief press release that it "plans to introduce products that support the Blu-ray format" such as "BD players and notebook PCs intergrating BD drives." Cool Photo Essay: Inside a Blu-Ray Factory

Speaking of Blu-ray, an Australian news site has posted a great photo essay on how Blu-ray discs are made. The essay, which walks you from the very beginning when each disc starts its life as "a collection of small polycarbonate granules," was shot at a new Sony Blu-ray factory that opened up near Sydney, Australia. I just finished writing a story about the "Five Best Blu-Ray Players Under $200" when Universal Studios announces it's added some new Blu-ray bells and whistles to the forthcoming release of Fast & Furious.
