LG's Dick Tracy-like 3G Watch Phone

Ever since comic book detective Dick Tracy first appeared in newspaper serials in the 1930s, manufacturers have been trying to bring a viable wrist-watch phone to market with only limited success. Now yet another company is set to try their hand at a Dick Tracy-like watch phone and this time its a 3G model!

Korea-based consumer electronics company LG will debut the new LG-GD910 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2009 and already it's received the biggest pre-buzz of the show, which takes place in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks.

But don't hold your breath. The LG-GD910 will actually first appear in Europe and then make its way to the United States some time in 2009...maybe. If this phone from LG sounds eerily familiar there was actually a prototype of the model on display at CES 2008 last January. So, like I said, don't hold your breath you'll see this any time soon in the U.S.

The phone is pretty cool though with a 1.4-inch touchscreen display that can be used as a keypad when making a call. There's also a small camera on top for making video calls along with Bluetooth; a speakerphone; a built-in MP3 player, and a text-to-speech functionality.

Best of all, its 3G-enabled so calls should sound crisp and Internet connections should be swift.

Whether this product actually become available in 2009 for U.S. users or enters the pantheon of Wired Magazine's annual list of vaporware, remains to be seen. I'm hopeful though.
