It may not be right to say that Killzone 2 is a good reason to buy a Sony Playstation 3, but it's a game that will no doubt become some sort of benchmark for future titles to come out for the gaming console.
Killzone 2 is a war game that is pretty unapologetic about war — the casualties, the destruction and the hatred between the two warring sides that fuels the conflict. The story in the game follows two previous titles, which were Killzone for the Playstation 2 from 2004 and Killzone: Liberation for the Playstation Portable (PSP) from 2006.
In those games, the people from the peaceful planet Vekta withstood and repulsed a massive invasion by the Helghast, a warmongering militarist and fascist people from the planet Helghan. In Killzone 2, the roles are reversed, as the Vektans take the fight to Helghan and try to destroy the Helghast military and its leadership.
While the story sounds like a sci-fi gimmick, it's actually quite interesting, and draws many parallels to Hitler and the Nazis during World War II. Though it's likely that many of you haven't played the previous games, it won't matter because you can jump into Killzone 2 with ease.
The Beauty of War
The run-and-gun pace of most of the action is frantic, but at least you get plenty of moments to really appreciate the amazing graphics the game has. The environments around you look so polished, where light glistens off a soldier's helmet just the right way, or when the skies light up with anti-aircraft fire. Despite the bloody combat, the game is just beautiful to look at.
Of course, it helps that the gameplay is compelling, and that you will feel challenged and entertained along the way.You also never fight alone, as fellow troops are by your side.
It's just unfortunate that there's no way to have a second gamer take part in a co-op mode, like some other games offer. Still, what you get here is a fast-paced shooting game that never lets up and ensures you'll be firing a barrage of bullets.
Hide behind cover with the L2 button and pop up to fire at enemy troops with R1. Helghast troops will use crafty tactics to flush you out by either throwing well-placed grenades or trying to flank you if there's an opportunity to do so. It would've been nice if your fellow troops were that smart, but unfortunately, you can expect them to let you down more than a few times.
Online Multi-Player Action
You can take your shooting skills online and fight with up to 32 players at one time. Needless to say, it can be a lot of fun to get involved in these types of skirmishes, and there are several team-based scenarios as well.
If you've got a group of friends who have the game and are connected to the Internet, you can form a clan together to fight other clans. Aside from bragging rights, there is a leaderboard that keeps track of the stats
If you're a fan of shooter games, there is a very good chance that you'll enjoy what Killzone 2 has to offer. The excellent graphics and stellar gameplay combine for a game that is easily one of the best-looking on the PS3, but also one of the top games of the year already.
There should be a demo available on the Playstation Network accessible through the PS3, so you can get a sense of what the game is all about.
