With the Cyber-shot DSC-G3, Sony's released the first WiFi-enabled digital camera that can connect to any public hotspot via its built-in web browser. Sony digital cameras have long been on the cutting edge when it comes to style and sleek designs but the G3 adds easy wireless photo and and video sharing to the list of Cyber-shot features.
The 10-megapixel Sony G3 digital camera makes it a snap to upload images and video directly to sharing sites whenever you can find a WiFi connection. So whether you're in a hotel, coffee shop, or airport and there's either a free or fee-based hotspot, just let the G3's web browser find the connection and you can start uploading your photos or video. The camera can connect wirelessly to either secure or unsecured wireless access points.
To make things even easier, the Sony G3 comes with complimentary AT&T WiFi access to Sony's Easy Upload Home Page until January 31, 2012. Currently there are thousands of AT&T hotspots across the United States including Starbucks, some book stores, food restaurants, hotels, and airports.
To upload your shots after you capture them with the Sony G3, just press the WLAN button on back of the digital camera which will then open the camera's web browser. Once you connect to the Internet via a wireless access point, the camera will automatically take you to the Sony Easy Upload Home Page which includes direct links to photo sharing sites such as Shutterfly and Picassa; and video sharing sites such as YouTube and Dailymotion; along with Photobucket, which is both a photo and video sharing site. You can also access other sharing sites through the G3's web browser.
When your photos or video is uploaded, you can then send email notifications to friends to tell them to take a look. Or, of course, you can share your images or video clips the "old fashioned" way by showing them off on the Sony G3's nice 3.5-inch LCD screen.
Other great features on the Sony G3 include a 4x optical zoom lens; Intelligent Scene Recognition which automatically detects eight different scenes -- including portraits, close-up macro shots, twilight, and others -- and optimizes the camera settings to help you take better pictures in different shooting conditions. We also like Sony's Face Detection and its Smile Shutter technology which automatically captures a smile right when it happens. Best of all, this snazzy looking black camera is just three-fourths of an inch thick.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3, which was unveiled at CES 2009, sells for $500.
