Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital Elph with First High-Sensitivity System
Digital Camera Review
PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital Elph
Lake Success, NY—Boasting top-level Canon features, like HD video recording, Canon USA’s newest PowerShot Digital Elph camera—the SD4000 IS—is the first Digital Elph to offer a high-sensitivity system, known as Canon’s HS system, with a CMOS sensor and bright f/2.0 lens.
Engineered for better low-light performance, the camera’s new 10 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor and its Digic 4 image processor create Canon’s HS system to enhance image quality in low light and help reduce noise at high ISO speeds. Along with this, the f/2.0 lens allows more light to enter, permitting higher shutter speeds, for further reducing the effect of camera shake. The combination of Canon’s HS system and the f/2.0 lens enables users to take photos without a flash, for a more natural look and greater depth of field, particularly suitable for portrait photography.
In addition, the SD4000 IS has the fastest high-speed burst rate to date in a Canon PowerShot Digital Elph—at 8.4 frames per second (fps). Also new to the Elph line are aperture and shutter controls that add flexibility and creative control.
“With the introduction of the new PowerShot SD4000 IS, Canon is putting the power of high-quality photography in an ultra-compact size to amplify the experience and quality customers see when shooting with a Canon camera,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging, Canon USA. “The two functions in the HS system allow our customers to capture the clearest pictures in any setting, resulting in more of a professional look.”
Other features include: a 3.0-inch wide-angle (28mm equivalent) LCD; a 3.8x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization; support for high-capacity SDXC (up to 2TB) and Eye-Fi wireless memory cards; new scene modes, such as miniature and fisheye effects; and Smart Shutter technology, which automatically takes pictures when a person smiles or winks.
Sporting curves, texture and a sculpted look to appeal to the design-savvy consumer, the dual-purpose PowerShot SD4000 IS offers an HD movie feature, and consumers can be creative with their footage by using the camera’s my color function with color swap and color accent options. And, a super slow motion movie function records at a very high frame rate, so it appears in slow motion when played back at regular speed; it captures a subject at 240 fps for playback at 30 fps. Videos can be downloaded from the camera via USB and played back on an HDTV using an HDMI output connector.
Canon’s PowerShot SD4000 IS comes in red, black and silver versions. While supplies last, there also will be a limited edition white PowerShot SD4000 IS available direct from Canon (www.shop.usa.canon.com). $349.99.
