The Kodak Zx1 pocket camcorder is small enough to take anywhere and rugged enough to handle some bumps and bruises. Here's a preview of the Kodak Zx1 pocket camcorder from DemystifyingDigital.com.

Kodak Zx1

The pocket camcorder segment continues to grow as more and more players offer high definition capture. The Kodak Zx1 will be among the latest entrants into the category when it launches in the Spring.

Unlike the previous Zi6 model, the Kodak Zx1 has trimmed down in size and upped the ante a bit with its features. It helps that it uses a rechargeable Li-ion battery, unlike the two AA batteries that came with the Zi6. The body is also more durable, given that it can resist rain, snow, sand and dirt. All the ports are protected from these elements as well. That doesn't mean you can dunk it in water, but you can get away with shooting some footage on a boat or when taking a breather from skiing.

Kodak also did away with the joystick that doubled as the record and stop button on the Zi6. The new Zx1 uses a button and arrow keys surrounding it to handle playback and navigation. Slow-motion playback, even frame-by-frame, is in the mix, too.

The SD Card Slot is an obvious necessity, and one you should keep in mind when looking into pocket camcorders. Like the Zi6, the built-in memory in the Zx1 won't offer much footage for you, especially when shooting in HD. With a 16GB card, you can shoot up to five hours in HD, which is probably more than enough, considering the Zx1 is more ideal for a series of short clips rather than long scenes.

The LCD screen size has been shortened to 2 inches from the 2.4-inch screen of the Zi6, but that had to be done to accommodate the smaller form factor. You can use the included software to upload videos directly to YouTube or simply drag and drop them onto your PC or Mac. As of now though, it looks like the software will be PC-only. You can also play videos directly onto your HDTV using the included HDMI cable.

Kodak says that it has improved the image quality under low-light conditions, but only you will know that for sure when you try it out. It comes in five colors: red, blue, black, pink and yellow, and will cost about $149.95 once it hits shelves in April.
